Your question is a classic technical question.
The file format .XLSX is a default format for Microsoft Excel 2007, which is out of date and is no longer supported by Microsoft.
As well, this file format is not supported by Google Docs.
Apparently, you must convert this file format to a more compatible file format -- .XLS -- in order to use the data in Google Docs.
NB: When changing file formats, some attributes of the data will be lost.
You can follow the link, below, to learn from an online blog, more about working the .XLSX files.
When you look in your gmail account, look at the top left corner. You will see something that says documents. Click on that and you will find the documents and power-points you saved. Just click on the file you want and edit.
In Google Docs, you can choose other users to view that specific file, but when it just says that you are viewing it and you don't see any other users listed, then it no one else can view it besides you. This makes it private only to you.

Google Docs is not robust in the commercial sense of a set of robust office products. Complex, obscure, infrequently used features are generally not available. As well, if the Google Docs servers are 'down' for any reason, you may not be able to access the files you need.

Use Excel 2007 (from Office 2007) or higher. If you don't have excel you can use the XLSX viewer tool. The tool allows to view the content of Excel files. It opens XLS, XLSX and other Excel formats even if Excel is not installed at the system and also recovers corrupted files and has a built-in browser allowing you conveniently navigate through your file. See the link below.
