To change the back axle on a Jaguar XJ40, first, safely lift and secure the vehicle, then remove the rear wheels. Disconnect the brake lines, axle shafts, and any necessary suspension components to access the axle assembly. Once everything is detached, support the axle and remove the mounting bolts to take out the old axle. Install the new axle by reversing the process, making sure to reconnect all components securely and bleed the brake lines if necessary.
Changing the axle on on a 306 abs's disc, was a very rare happening back then. Some people thought the heat could effect the axle, when it was actually impossible.
I think that pertains to your exhaust system from the " axle back "

they forgot to put the ABS ring back on after removing the axle.
well fist of all the xjs is a two door V-12 and the xj40 is a four door. also the xj40 was supposed to be a newer and better xj6 but in my opinion the xj40 with those square headlights and boxy look is one of the ugliest jaguars ever built. "just not a looker" there made in different years.
if its a double axle at the back it is a 7.5 tonne and if a single axle at back its a 3.5 tonne

To change the front axle assembly, first, safely lift and secure the vehicle using jack stands. Remove the wheel and brake components to access the axle, then disconnect any necessary components such as the CV joint or hub assembly. After detaching the old axle, install the new axle by reversing the disassembly steps, ensuring all connections are secure. Finally, reassemble the brakes and wheel, and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
the only difference to changing brakes with a full floating axle , is that you dont have to remove the axle the brake drum will come off the hub with out removing the axle. you may have to get underneath and back off the brakes to free it up enuff to move the drum
loosen axle bolt take outer tie rod bolt off remove from hub take bottom ball joint bolt off seprate from hub and pull out alittle and axle can come out then put it back together
This conversion is available in kit from from this company:http://www.jaguarspecialties.com/XJ40-overview.aspGet with them for details.Good luck
This would be the exiting of the tailpipes area,ie:behind the rear axle.
