Like every home in the real world has his own address, every computer in the internet has it's own address - an IP address.

Just like when you can't receive anything via mail if nobody knows your address, nobody can send you any information (like e-mails) if nobody knows your computer's address.

If you do not know your IP address, see your system's properties.

Hope you find this useful.

Simple. For other computers to know where to communicate their packets to across the web.

Like a person, they have a first name and last name to identify them. Same with a computer to identify where to send information. When two or more computers are communicating with each other, it is crucial that each machine has an IP address which acts as its name. Even though you can change the name on a computer, networks do not understand actual letters and words, they can only understand numbers. Each octet - or section of numbers delimited by a period - is a routing number that tells where each address is located. find your ip address by clicking start, run then typing ipconfig/all

The IP address contains the network identifer, which is necessary for a router to determine where to send the packet. Networks are made up of different network identifiers, so this information is necessary to determine how to deliver packets.

ip address is needded because it will indicate the correct destination to which data is to be send. without ip addresss it would be very difficult to indicate or notify where the data has been send and from where the data are coming to the system.but the ip address should be unique.
