The Essential Guide to Telecommunications, by Annabel Dodd is a good overview of the various aspects of the industry. I read it before my first job in the industry and it helped me keep things in perspective as I learned my new role in the gigantic process that connects people and devices. I read the fifth edition.

A Google search for "telecommunications" will give you good, high level overview as well. From there, you just delve deeper in your area of interest. There's history, current market, notable companies, legal, research and development, network deployments, sales, material, standards, commercial management, operations services and support, billing, core, transmission, backhaul, and microwave, just to name a few subtopics.
