Area code 301 and overlay code 240 serve the southern and western parts of the state of Maryland, including Frederick and the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Area code 410 and overlay codes 443 and 667 serve the northern and eastern parts of Maryland, including Baltimore and Annapolis. For any combination of those five area codes, there are some numbers that are local calls and some that are toll. The good news is, it is easy to find out: just try dialing the number from a landline phone without the "1+" prefix (for example, 443-555-0123 instead of 1-443-555-0123). If the call goes through, it's local; if you get a recording telling you to hang up and redial with "1+," then it's a toll call.
