Ethernet Cable is slightly bigger than the phone line jack.

If you don't know how to buy, go to market and ask for Ethernet cable. After that you plug it into the Ethernet port. If it exactly fits in then you bought right if not it is Phone line jack/cable.

Let's get a few terms straight:

We have Jacks, Plugs, Cables, and the things that run on them (Standards). I'll capitalize these terms in the answer.

Jacks accept Plugs. Cables connect Jacks to Jacks, or Plugs to Plugs. Standards run on top of all of these, and aren't tied to any particular cable or jack/plug.

Most commonly, the Standard called Ethernet runs on CAT5 Cable with RJ45 Jacks/Plugs. Analogous to this is the phone lines - the Standard called phone service runs on telephone Cable with RJ11 Jacks/Plugs.

The RJ plugs are called modular plugs. They look and work similarly but differ where it matters - the number of connectors. It's highly unfortunate that a RJ11 plug fits into a RJ45 jack...

*RJ11 (for the telephone) has only two connectors - the little metal bits on the Plug form a circuit that allows your voice to travel to the phone company, and your friend's voice to travel to you.
*RJ45 (for Ethernet) has 8 connectors. The wires inside the Cable is called twisted-pair, and it helps eliminate interference called crosstalk. There's 4 pairs of wire in there, wrapped around each other.

So, long story short, Ethernet (and it's jacks, plugs, and cables) will not work with the telephone system (with it's jacks, plugs, and cables) because they expect different numbers of wires, and different types of information flowing over those wires.
