Children should be allowed to use the Internet. Being able to use the Internet is a valuable life skill. In order to be successful in life a person must know how to navigate in cyber space. The Internet is so important for children to understand because as they progress in school they will be required to research topics related to school. It is important however to teach children how to be safe on the Internet. They must be taught that it can be a dangerous place and that if they have any questions they should ask them. In the society of today you cannot afford to not understand the Internet. You must know how to use it along with how to be safe online.

+ 'Chatting' online isn't as dangerous as it's made out to be.

Depending on age, it's wise to regularly remind them of the dangers of giving away personal information, so if your child is 10-14, I'd advise you do that.

If your child is a teenager, they'd have developed already a good understanding of what you should and shouldn't do in public chatrooms ect..

I've done website development too, So I have a good understanding the level of explicit material there is being posted in chatrooms, if your child is under 13, I'd suggest contacting your internet provider and getting the more 'seedier' chatrooms blocked.

I noticed this was posted under Facebook. Facebook is absolutely fine, it's a great way of connecting with friends and family, also meeting new people.

BUT I can see your concern... It's about the social and mental aptitude of your child, it's the job of a parent to introduce the internet to them at the youngest age possible, because they'll discover it sooner or later (unless your armish) and the more internet smart your child is the better.

The areas of danger on the internet are Chat Rooms, it's where pedofiles thrive, but the social networking sites like Facebook, Bebo, Myspace and Twitter are fairly safe.

Recent examples of bullying in cyberspace have shown that there are dangers associated with using these communications media. Problems with understanding what is meant and not being able to get immediate feedback has lead to beatings and suicides. It should be monitored carefully.

Their are people on the Internet who are not who they say they are. If your child ever puts any information about themselves on the Internet that could be used against them. Haven't you heard of some of the creepy things that happen to people? As a mother of two young children, I would be VERY careful about your child's use of chat rooms.

Yes, but the amount of supervision could be determined by the age and level of responsibility of the individual child. A younger child should be supervised more closely than most older children; however, all should be supervised to some extent.

Supervising children on the internet is an opportunity to teach them internet safety, rather than just "you can do this, but not that." Parents should explain to children why "this" is allowed and "that" is not allowed. As children learn and understand, they could be given less supervision and more freedom. Again, though, that would depend on how responsible the child is and should come with age. All younger children and pre-teens, as well as many teens, should be supervised to some extent.
