"City code" is another term for "area code": a telephone prefix for part of a country.

Mexico has about 400 city codes, also called "claves LADA." A few examples:

  • Mexico City: 55
  • Guadalajara: 33
  • Monterrey: 81
  • all other cities in Mexico: (3-digit code)
  • Puebla: 222
  • Acapulco: 744
  • Puerto Vallarta: 322
  • Cancún: 998

Note that for a landline, you dial +52 followed by the area code, but for a mobile, you must dial +52 1 followed by the area code and number. For example, +52 55 12345678 for a landline in Mexico City, but +52 1 55 12345678 for a mobile from Mexico City.

The area code and local number will always total 10 digits.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)
