Kerosene cook stoves come in two types: pressure and wick stoves. Their advantages over conventional (gas or electric) stoves are many:

  1. They are cheaper to operate and far more fuel efficient than natural gas, propane gas, or electricity.
  2. They are truly multi-fuel and will burn just about anything that burns although gasoline should be avoided at all costs. They will burn kerosene, alcohol in many grades, even whiskey.
  3. They are simply constructed and require little to no maintenance.
  4. They are cheap to purchase, even quality units.
  5. They are multi-function as they are not only good for cooking food and boiling-sterilising water, but also in heating as they produce no carbon monoxide.
  6. They are environmentally responsible as they emit no polluting emissions and operate from bio fuel which is a renewable resource.

Disadvantages:

  1. Kerosene can leave a bad smell if you are careless.
  2. You must crack a window open to allow fresh air in if using indoors as they consume oxygen and can be harmful in that respect.
  3. Care must be taken as you are working with a flame.

Summary: The only truly responsible and practical, performing, method of cooking, baking, and lighting is kerosene / alcohol / biofuel, appliances.
