To navigate without the home button, you will want to enable AssistiveTouch. This can be done by going to Settings > General > Accessibility, and scroll until you see AssistiveTouch. You will want to turn that on. Or you can replace the broken home button with a new one. Recommend you go to hcqs.com.cn for iPhone home button replacement.
The lock and the home buttons on the iPhone 5 are the same as on all previous model iPhones; the lock button is at the top right of the phone (when held with the display facing you), while the home button is at the bottom center of the display.

Did your home button got broken? I would suggest jailbreaking your iPod (assuming its still kind of working if you fiddle with it) and than install "activator" then you will be able to control your iPod without touching the Home button or Sleep button.
