This is metallic sediment which is normally removed by the 'anode rod' -If you've never changed the anode, it's time now . This is a large bolt head on top of the tank, which originally held a rod about 3 feet long. Switch off incoming water and loosen this bolt. You will almost certainly need a large socket and a 24" breaker bar. Loosen only a turn, then drain the tank. You first turn OFF the power to tank, then attach a hose pipe to the bottom fitting, lead it outside or to any drain, turn on the valve by it, open the relief valve so air can enter the H/W tank. Let the whole tank empty -takes about 30 -40 minutes. While this is happening pull the anode out and get a new one fitted in. -( About $25 in most Plumbing stores.) Next, when empty turn ON the inlet valve and let cold water run through the tank and out the hose, now you will see the sludge coming out. Let this run 5-7 minutes or until water is coming through clean. Now you are done . Let it fill, then turn on power.

Hot water tank? On a water heater tank there is always a extra black plug in case you need to change your way of installing the pipes to it. The plug on most electric water heaters are opposite of your PRV valve (pressure relief valve) so if your PRV valve is on top then your plug will be on the side and if your PRV is on the side then your plug will be on top of the water heater if its electric.

How do you connect a 240 volt electric heater It is a baseboard unit the has a black and red internal wire for connection Do you use 12 2 wire or 12 3 wire The thermostat has 2 red 2 black wire?

2 wire (plus ground) is all you need for a 240 volt heater provided there is no 120 volt accessories in the heater such as a built in convenience receptacle. If cable is used, the white wire of the 2 wire cable will be a HOT-LEG even though it is white-this is one of the code exceptions. The size of the guage is dependent on the size of the load and other factors. 12 guage will handle up to 1500 watts generally.
