Well, it was pretty small and it was black and white. There were only a few channels and it was REALLY expensive to have one so a lot of people didn't even OWN a TV for a long time.

It was black and white and they had these crazy looking camras and that's .
Here. Have a few laughs: http://www.tvhistory.tv/
the first TV looked like a wooden cabinet/box with several knobs and a small screen (black and white!!)
Early tellevisions had a fairly small round tube about 9 inches across. Everything was in black and white. The pictures were cut off at the corners. It was difficult to get a sharp picture. Frequently there was a shadow of the picture and there were spots running across the screen. The spots were called "snow." They sat in a square cabinet. Outside of New York City and a few other metropolitan areas, there was one channel. That one station determined which programs people could watch. The children's programs were Howdie Doodie, Kukla Fran and Ollie, and Captain Kangaroo. Things like dancing and talking heads took up a lot of time. In the evening there was Milton Bearle, Sid Caesar, Jackie Gleason, Amos and Andy, and a few other long forgotten. The Black leadership did not like Amos and Andy and got it removed from the Air. Then Lucille Ball used the same old jokes with I Love Lucy and made a fortune! During the day time Soap Operas only gradually adopted to TV. Some genius figured out that they had to be illustrated radio rather than TV in order to work. Women had to be able to hear them an not see them and still know what what was going on. When women actually saw them, they had to see beautiful people. In about 1956, the larger square tube came in. Then a few years later, color arrived. When color arrived programs adopted color almost immediately. People with money to spend watched color TV. "Sales occurr according to disposable income, not according to population." With color TV, the types of programs changed. When satellite and cable came in, programming changed again.
