It is estimated that, as of 2008, there are 77 million .com websites registered.
In the early days of the internet all domain names ended in one of the following top level domains:
- com for commercial
- mil for military
- gov for government
- edu for educational institution
- org for organizations not covered by the above
Later the ISO country codes were added as top level domains.

The term .com was reserved for commercial use only. Since the explosion of the Website era, .com was open to the public, and many people secured many .com domains as they could, in hopes they could sell them for high money.
