.com is the most common top level domain name. It stands for "commercial", typically denoting a commercial website. However, due to its popularity, there is no restriction on who can register a .com. Many personal websites and organizations also use .com.

It is estimated that, as of 2008, there are 77 million .com websites registered.

In the early days of the internet all domain names ended in one of the following top level domains:

  1. com for commercial
  2. mil for military
  3. gov for government
  4. edu for educational institution
  5. org for organizations not covered by the above

Later the ISO country codes were added as top level domains.

Normally It denotes what type of website it is. However, with the demand for websites and domain names, .com is the leading top level domain ending. The term .com was reserved for commercial use only. Since the explosion of the Website era, .com was open to the public, and many people secured many .com domains as they could, in hopes they could sell them for high money.

Not necessarily. ".com" is the official suffix for commercial domains, not governments (they use the ".gov" suffix). However, a government could certainly purchase a ".com" domain.
