According to my family tree records, the oldest known forefather of the Okkema clan is Ocke Melis of the village of Goenga Friesland in the early 1700's. His youngest son, Edzerd took the family name of Ockema in 1811.This spelling was never used by any of his descendants. There is another family named Okkema originally from Goenga, descendants of Okke Tjipkes; they are not known to be related. According to my father, Okkema means son of Okke. There you have it.
