What happened in chapter 12 of Underground to Canada?

In beginning of chapter 12 Julilly, Liza, Lester and Adam realize that their cart had reached a narrow, rougher lane because of tree branches scraped against the sides of their cart. They then came to a mysterious stop and the little driver told them all to come out of the hay immediately. The little driver then told them that they will be staying in the barn just a head of them for one day and one night only and then they must continue there journey. Before the driver left he gave them a compass and told them to follow the compass east until they come to Cumberland Mountains, near the city of Knoxville. Because if they followed the compass north all the way it would be too dangerous. The mountains would take them to Kentucky in the city of Lexington, there they would follow the railroad tracks at night which lead them north to the city of Cincinnati, Ohio and the underground railway president's name was Levi Coffin. They couldn't forget because it was too important. They all then walked into the barn as soon as the little driver had left and started eating the food, there was bread, cheese and dried venison. After they had eat Adam got a pail and started beating a rhythm with a stick. Then Julilly began to dance and Liza clapped her hands to the beat. Then Adam stopped and said that it was a good idea for him and Lester to go cat some fish so they went and Julilly and Liza began decorating the barn when they heard pounding of horses' hoof and cries of men and whips cracking onto playful leaves.
