It really depends on a number of different factors. What is your website about? Do you want to make money from it? I started a blog 2 months ago which has a niche subject matter and I currently average 700 - 1000 pageviews a day. I have achieved this by swapping links with like-minded sites, making sure I am listed by Google, creating interesting content, updating regularly, taking advantage of social media and a few other techniques.
If you were running a for-profit website I would suggest 5000 pageviews would be the bare minimum you would want. This would equate to about 1500 unique visitors a day depending on how much content you have.
