In North America (USA, Canada, etc.), the toll-free codes are 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, and 844, with 833 and 822 reserved for future toll-free use. Thus, an 888 number is one type of toll-free number, but there are several other toll-free codes also in use. All of them are toll-free, but you must use the correct code for the particular company you are trying to reach. For example, 1-800-555-0123 and 1-844-555-0123 are completely different toll-free numbers and may belong to completely unrelated companies.
