The government cheese handed out though the United States Welfare program is American style processed cheese. Coming from a single parent home with five children I have consumed it before. In our area of the country the box was stamped American processed cheese food and was produced locally. It was heavier and more solid than Velveta(TM), more along the lines of block chedder, but very mild in flavor, not sharp at all. I did get bored enough to compare the ingredients list to a name brand we had in our refrigerator and found them virtually the same: Pasteurized milk, milkfat, protein, whey, water, salt, yellow and red food dye (to give it that standard orange color), & emulsifiers (term can mean; vegetable oils, preservatives, or both). Granted, It has been some thirty years now since I had last partaken, so memory may have omitted an ingredient or two at most. I do remember well that it was excellent on grilled cheese Sandwiches, between crackers, or placed atop a hamburger.
