A database may be accessed using the internet and some "open web" sites may be managed as databases Behind the Scenes, but often the term "database" means a formal collection of records comprising citations, abstracts, or full text of articles previously published. The work involved in creating these records and the intellectual property value of formally published material can be indicators of higher level research quality and greater accuracy or authority. Libraries, universities, governments and corporations often subscribe to commercially published databases that provide validated access to newspaper, magazine, and journal articles as well as conference papers, technical reports, encyclopedia and directory entries. The database structure enables systematic search access using indexing points such as author, subject, publication name, and publication date. For example, a public library may subscribe to databases that enable users to access articles from Consumer Reports, Fortune magazine, or Ranger Rick among others. The text (and sometimes images) provided will be identical to the print equivalent. The proper citation to use for these items will be the same as for the print and will be included with the record. The only difference is that the content is accessed electronically using the Internet rather than by using print indexes and back issues of publications.
