An "infrared cable" does not exist. Infrared is a wavelength of light and is used as a form of wireless transmission. You may be thinking of an infrared blaster. An infrared blaster is a wire with an infrared transmitter on one that is taped to the front of one device to emulate a remote control and is connected to another device, such as a VCR. There is no standardized length for such a cable. Since the data carried on it is serialized, likely does not need to be transmitted very fast, and is likely unshielded, such a wire could theoretically be used for several hundred feet.
The current maximum length for a serial cable is around 50 meters. Different cables have length limits with the maximum varying.
The maximum length of a 1000ft Cat6 cable for networking is 328 feet.
The maximum length of a Cat3 Ethernet cable that can be used for networking purposes is 100 meters.
