Normally they are protected because of abuse by an individual or really silly answers. They usually get protected for very good reasons. If you feel that a question has been protected you can complain to and Community Advisor @ Answers.com (no spaces) and state your case.
A faster method would be to go to the supervisor that protected the question and give them the response to wish to add. If they feel it is worthwhile, they will add the statement.
You will find that being friendly, honest, and fair here goes a long way to keeping answers from being deleted and getting a question protected.
