The war with Thailand, and Vietnam( in-between 1400s to 1800s after the Khmer Empire fell) In World War II, Cambodia emerged unscathed. Though the Japanese occupied the country briefly after the fall of the Vichy French, it was a peaceful occupation that stuck to the vision of decolonisation. The Japanese for instance dropped plans to make a phonetic version of Khmer from the Roman alphabet as the French had used in Vietnam and had in store for Cambodia. After the fall of Dien Bien Phu and the subsequent incursion of the US in the mid 60s, King Sihanouk displayed remarkable statesmanship by keeping his country neutral between so many great giants; however, Cambodia was drawn in to the Second Indochina war with the newly-founded Khmer Republic under Lon Nol becoming sympathetic to the US in 1970 and Sihanouk turning to the Communists after his ousting. This ended with the arrival in Phnom Penh of the Khmer Rouge in 1975 (coinciding with the year that the South Vietnamese government fell to the North). Under Pol Pot's leadership, they instigated the Third Indochina War in 1978 by attacking Vietnam. This was quickly ended by a far larger and superior army that had recently defeated a superpower, the Vietnamese took Phnom Penh very early in 1979. And in 2008 cold war with Thailand when Thai army came into Cambodian soil and claimed that those area were belong to Thailand. But the International Court of Justice had ruled that those dispute areas are belonged to Cambodia.
