Upconversion is the technique of resizing a standard definition image to a high definition. A standard definition image is made of 480 or 576 lines (North America is on 480 line and Europe is 576 line). To dsplay that same image in a high definition format, the number of lines needs to be increased to 720 or 1080. A similar process takes place in LCD and plasma televisions. Each television has a native format, 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high, for example. Any signal that is not an identical format needs to be resized to be displayed properly, so an upconversion or down conversion will take place. It is worth pointing out that a standard definition image does not become and HD quality image when it is upconverted. Although the image size is increased, the conversion does not add any detail to the image.
A TV can't display a resolution higer then it's max. Second, let's understand that the two consoles playstation 3 and xbox 360 both sends a true 720P signal. 1080P is actually a upconverted signal of 720P, so after knowing this, do we still want 1080P from our consoles?
In a double conversion transponder , the signal received from the ground station is converted into IF , then the signal is filtered & amplified . Finally the IF signal is again upconverted to desired frequency and transmitted downwards.
Most HDTV's have the capability to play VHS, but depending on your TV capabilities it may or might not fill the screen. Also, the bigger the HDTV the worse the picture will look. You can only stretch 480i so far before it starts to look horrible. On Most standard resolution TV's VHS looks ok because you are viewing the VHS source at such a low resolution, that you can't see all of its defects. When you go to an HDTV you are actually getting a view of that VHS source that is either 2x or 3x higher in resolution, which basically means you are getting a much better look at all of the defects of the 480i VHS source. As a result, 480i VHS source on an HDTV looks worse than it does on a standard television. There ARE some newer DVD/VCR combination units that "upconvert" the VHS signal, but 480i upconverted to 720p or 1080i/1080p will not look as good as a signal that is natively those higher resolutions. As a plus, some TV's also do some signal processing which further cleans up the signal from incoming devices.. So betwen a device upconverting and a TV processing, the signal might not look half as bad is if it were untouched... But it still will not be as clean as a straight nativie 720p/1080i/1080p signal.
