What makes your phone crackle?

If your phone is a landline telephone it is usually a fault on the pair of wires that connect your home or office to the telephone exchange (or central office)

If there is a bad connection somewhere along the line, a crackle may be heard when the wind blows the line or water gets into the connection

If you have an old handset with a microphone made with Graphite granules, it may be those that are causing the crackle, hitting the mouthpiece may improve the situation if this is the case.

If the crackle only happens when you are on the phone to one particular person, its probably their line that has the fault.

When telephone exchanges used Strowger mechanical rather than todays electronic equipment to route calls, crackles were often generated by the telephone exchange as well.

Some crackles can be caused by a faulty phone, so to avoid unnecessary expense, try another phone on your line before calling you phone company, who may charge if your equipment it at fault.
