When was LCD invented?

The active matrix LCD was invented by Westinghouse. Prior to that there had been numerous attempts to make a display using liquid crystals. None of these prior attempts produced anything usable.

Liquid crystals were not invented, they were accidentally discovered. However after they had been discovered various people at various times invented a variety of different mechanisms that made use of liquid crystals for many uses.

Austrian botanical physiologist Friedrich Reinitzer was examining the properties of various derivatives of cholesterol in 1888, when he discovered the class of materials now known as cholesteric liquid crystals.

The first research work on flat panel liquid crystal displays was done in 1962 by physical chemist Richard Williams and electronics engineer George H. Heilmeier at RCA.

The first successful small flat panel liquid crystal displays were invented in 1973.

The person that is credited with inventing the LCD monitor is George H. Heilmeier from RCA David Sarnoff Research Center. Heilmeier also worked with Lucian Barton and Louis Zanoni to create the first LCDs.
