Color television has a long history. It was first demonstrated in 1929 by John Logie Baird, the inventor of the world's first television system. The color system was an extension of his original black and white system. Although the principles of mixing red, green and blue light worked well, the technology of the time really wasn't up to running color systems. Baird's attempt to find backers for his system were unsuccessful.

In the US, color broadcasts were started in 1953. It was a commercial failure, largely because the color system was incompatible with the existing black and white service. The television buying public weren't ready for two televisions in their living room. The service was quietly withdrawn after a few months.

1955 saw the start of NTSC color in the US. It was entirely compatible with the existing black and white system and within a few months, sales were increasing rapidly.

Europe was a little later to introduce it. 1968 was the start date for both Germany and the UK and other countries followed soon after. The European PAL system was different to the US system and the world to this day supports both systems.

What is the color of the Twilight Zone?

Television shows were cheaper to produce in Black & White. Show producers did not really think into the future about there still being a market for a year decades later. Most network shows were being made in color by 1965 but Twilight Zone ended production in 1964. Another consideration was the availability of color televisions. When The Twilight Zone went on the air in 1959, most if not all televisions were Black & White, so it wouldn't have helped to make it in color.
