The word Plumbing itself is from the Latin "Plumbum" (I may have misspelled that but I'm pretty close). Also the element lead is abbrivated Pb on the Periodic Table of elements. The lead was used for water lines and there are the remains of some still today in Rome. Of course there is a lot of speculation that lead poisoning was a large factor in the downfall of the empire. Plumbing kind of fell out of vouge after that for a while and you will find the number of deaths from water borne illness shot up as a result.
