So we can keep this website free for you to use.

We provide information to you for free. However it costs millions to keep a website this size afloat.
Answers is an extremely popular website which has massive costs to cover. From staff payments, server costs, air conditioning costs to keep the servers cool, storage space for the servers and air conditioning, developers, technicians, engineers, administrators and so on. As said, it costs millions to keep Answers running every year. The adverts provide Answers with a source of revenue.
Money does not grow on trees, nor does it materialise out of thin air.

There are three ways a website can make money:

  1. Charging the visitors to access the premium content
  2. Beg and grovel visitors to donate money (usually charity-based websites)
  3. Place adverts on the website to generate revenue

Because we believe knowledge should be free, we choose the advert route. Having to see adverts is a small price you pay to have access to the free information we provide, which is better than paying an overpriced yearly subscription fee as many websites force their users to do. So you should be grateful that you have access to unlimited information, for free.

If you find the adverts are slowing down your computer, then this is likely an issue at your end.
  • Check your browser is up to date.
  • Check your Flash is up to date.
  • If you use internet Explorer, get rid of that sluggish abomination and use Chrome or FireFox.
  • Close unnecessary tabs. Delete search toolbars. Change any bright or vivid browser theme you have to lighter versions.
  • Do a virus scan for a keylogger, spyware or trojan infection.
  • Upgrade your internet plan if it is too slow for serious browsing.

If you sign up to Answers.com as a proper member, not only do you have better tools and more benefits, but you also have the option to hide most adverts in your account settings.
