Why do people spend so much time online?

Because they are addicted to the information the internet provides and have in a sense become a slave to technology. That is one answer. Perhaps another is that they feel more safe and secure with the internet than they do with the real world. The true answer to question is a matter of perspective and opinion.

Because they don't go outside and enjoy life like in the old days and they think they have nothing better to do while they could be mountain climbing biking bird watching swimming fishing and thousands of other ideas

People are increasingly interested in the internet because of its intrinsic advantages. Firstly, gone is the era when people used to drop letter in the mailbox for distant relatives or for official requirement and wait for atleast 10 days to reach the recipient's hands. Through internet one can mail his letter by the twinkle of eyes. The cumbersome thick account books are thing of the past,with all accounting datas stored in the disc. You need not to go a cinema hall or multiplex to enjoy a movie what you can enjoy at home comfort. You can listen to music and or draw picture if you are a Nature lover. The days of writing personal diaries are gone. Now you can write diary at computer where thousand pages awaits you ! With multi facet activities involving our day to day life, people are increasingly interested in the internet.
