Theres not really a 100% valid answer to that more or less just lingo that caught onto a wide demogragh of people.

Answer:The internet is a communication medium, it's not a location. The usage is similar to communication carried by other media. In English, we talk to people "on the 'phone", not "in the 'phone"; we listen to programs "on the radio", not "in the radio"; we watch things "on the television", not "in the television". Not all languages make that distinction when using prepositions, but English is fairly consistent (in this case).
