What small electrical component does the same thing as a modem?

I wouldn't say an "electrical" component, but a modem is very similar to a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) or ADC (analog-to-digital converter) like in sound chipsets (or sound cards) preinstalled in a computer or a dedicated separate sound system used in a home theater or a production studio.

The word modem is a shortened version of what word?

Modem is an acronym for modulator-demodulator. It is a device which makes communication between computers and other devices possible by converting data to a form which the phone or cable lines can transmit.
