As of October 2012, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is still considering whether to split area code 814 (west central and northwestern Pennsylvania, including Altoona, Erie, and State College) or impose an overlay. The PPUC decided in late 2010 to do a geographic split, but with projections showing that a new area code won't be needed until at least 2014, they are taking the time to reconsider.
Under the proposed split, Erie and Punxsutawney would change to 582, while Altoona, State College, Emporium, Clearfield, and Coudersport would retain 814.
Under the proposed overlay, all existing 814 numbers would remain unchanged. The new 582 overlay code would be added to the entire area, which would mean that local calls would require dialing the area code even if it's the same as your own.
