Italics is a type of writing that slants slightly to the right like so.

Thought processes of characters in literature:

That will depend on the style manual you are to follow. It is used for plays in some of them, others will use italics or underlines.

The author may use italics on page 147 in "The Giver" to denote emphasis on certain words or phrases, to highlight important ideas or themes, or to represent the character's inner thoughts or emotions. Italics can help draw attention to specific points or create a sense of urgency or intensity in the text.
