No-one knows! The Tyndale Old Testament commentary on Exodus (by Alan Cole - 1973) refers to a barberry bush as a possibility. I think this is mentioned in Driver's Commentary on Exodus. Then the creationtips.com web site suggests it could be moringa oleifera. The important thing is that on this occasion when God's people were in need God met that need.
