As the Greek cites of mainland Greece became overpopulated, they sent out the surplus landless people to found new cities and support themselves. These cites were spread around the Mediterranean and Black Seas from today's Spain to Asia Minor.

The Mediterranean Sea was a source of seafood and a highway for shipping produce and other trade.

It was also a military highway and battleground.
