The bell was made in London, England for the Pennsylvania State House and it cracked soon after it arrived. A new bell was cast in 1753 by local craftsmen using metal from the English bell. By 1846 a thin crack began to affect the sound of the bell and it was repaired in 1846 and rang for a Washington birthday celebration. The bell cracked again and has not rung since. It weights 200 pounds and is made of 70% copper, 25% tin, and small amounts of lead, zinc, arsenic, gold, and silver. It hangs from what is believed to be the original yoke made from American elm.
The crack on the Liberty Bell is approximately 24.5 inches long. It runs from the top of the bell down to its shoulder, significantly affecting its ability to ring. The crack developed in the early 19th century, and despite attempts to repair it, the bell has remained silent since that time.
Yes, When the bell cracked, remedial work was done on it. 1.The bell was rotated, so the crack was away from the hammer. 2.The hammer weight was reduced. 3.The bell had squares cut into it, either side of the crack, to stop the crack increasing. In this form the bell still rings today.
A large crack runs from the bottom of the bell to the inscription on the upper portion of the bell.
As you can tell from looking below the bell, the coin is a half dollar. Also, if you check any history book you'll find that the Liberty Bell really does have a crack in it.
