Ashuelot is an aboriginal word (Pennacook or Natick) meaning "place between." It is used to name a river, pond and town located in Cheshire County, which is also known as the Monadnock Region, in the southwestern corner of New Hampshire.

There are as many pronunciations as there are locals to ask, but it is generally pronounced one of three ways: AH-shoe-lot, Ash-WILL-et, or Ash-WHEEL-ot. My personal observation is that the latter is perhaps the most prevalent choice.
