Many years no water reaches as far as Mexico, due to excessive amounts being used for irrigation. This became especially troublesome early in the 20th century...an irrigation canal was being built but got away from the engineers, and the flow of the Colorado River went into it. This resulted in the formation of the Salton Sea, in the desert east of San Diego. The Salton Sea did not exist prior to this ecological disaster.
