Early versions of the Wall were made by stamping earth and gravel between board frames. There were many walls replaced by the wall that is there now. The first wall was built during the Qin dynasty (around 221 BC), but the wall was an extended project over many generations. Many thousands of slaves and workers were employed. == == == == == == Transporting large quantities of materials was difficult, so builders always tried to use local resources. Stones from the mountains were used to build the Wall in the mountain ranges. The Han, Sui, Northern and Jin dynasties all repaired, rebuilt, or expanded sections of the Great Wall to defend themselves against northern invaders. During the Ming Dynasty, the Chinese kept the nomadic tribes out by constructing walls along the northern border of China. Acknowledging the Mongol control established in the Ordos Desert, the wall followed the desert's southern edge. They used bricks and stone instead of rammed earth. Sections near the Ming capital of Beijing were especially strong. During the Shun Dynasty, the Manchus had assistance from a sympathetic general and got through the wall, taking Beijing and establishing the Qing Dynasty. Under Qing rule, China's borders extended beyond the walls. After Mongolia was annexed into the empire, construction and repairs on the Great Wall were discontinued. But a separate wall was erected in the south to protect the Chinese from the 'southern barbarians' called the Miao.
