Canals cut months or weeks from travel time by ships. This helped establish in-country trade for the newly established USA. Goods could go through locks and dams on rivers (at Pittsburgh PA for example) to the Ohio River through the Ohio Territory, over to the Mississippi River. Erie Canal through NYS shortened overland travel from the Hudson to The Great Lakes, through first Lake Erie. The Panama Canal and Suez Canal shortened sea and Gulf travel, and enlarged international trade.
