The Atacama is located along the Pacific coast of Chile and Peru.
All regions near the equator receive about the same amount of solar energy but the Atacama desert gets the most.
The Ojos del Salado volcano is located very close to the extreme southeastern boundary of the Atacama Desert.
The Andes Mountains make up the eastern border of the Atacama Desert.
Some scientists argue that the driest desert is the Antarctic Desert, others that the Atacama Desert deserves that honor. However, the Atacama is the closest to the country of Peru and the northern parts of that desert cover the southwestern part of that country.
The Namib Desert is located on the southwestern coast of Africa and is classified as a cool coastal desert. The Atacama Desert is another cool coastal desert located on the coast of Chile and Peru.

Actually, there are no real deserts near the equator. This region is known more as a region of heavy rain and rainforests. Most hot deserts occur about 30 degrees north and 30 degrees south of the equator.
