Using SW Pennsylvania as an example, Fayette County PA across the Monongahelia River from Washington County PA had a strong shipbuilding yard in the 1800s. Goods and livestock were driven on muddy tracks (roads) from townships west of Washington County PA and shipped on the Ten Mile Creek in Washington County PA, then to the Monongahelia River in Washington County and Fayette County PA (the river flows through both counties), then onto to the three rivers junction at Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, PA. From there ships and barges carried goods to the Mississippi River where shipments went both north and south. Going south, once ships reached Gulf of Mexico ports, they could transport goods to larger ships that could go in any direction. Ships were still subjected to stresses from storms, so there were many shipwrecks, but yes, goods/freight could have made it to the Caribbeans-- and as well, from the Caribbeans to the US.

Northern States also used the Mississippi River to send products South to Gulf States and beyond.
