Oceans are big water bodies. Salinity is due to the presence of minerals in water.
There are different kinds of process that deeply affects the salinity of ocean water. Continental deflections, Coriolis Effect, convection current and also evaporation.
Salinity is defined as the total amount of solid material in grams contained in 1km of sea water and is expressed as part per thousand. Salinity affects physical property of ocean such as temperature, pressure, density, waves and currents.
From this information, we can conclude that ocean water is significantly saltier than fresh water, with ocean salinity being about 70 times higher. This difference in salinity plays a crucial role in determining the types of organisms that can thrive in each environment, as many marine species are adapted to high salinity levels while freshwater species are not. Additionally, the disparity in salinity affects water density and circulation patterns in the ocean.
In open ocean evaporation affects the salinity of the oceans, in closed oceans the lack of sunrays cause greater salinity levels.
Three factors are evaporation and freezing of sea water.
Salinity affects the density of ocean water because higher salinity increases the mass of water without significantly increasing its volume. As salt is dissolved in water, the overall density rises, making saltier water heavier. This increased density can influence ocean currents and stratification, as denser water tends to sink beneath less dense, fresher water. Consequently, variations in salinity play a crucial role in ocean circulation and marine ecosystems.
Evaporation leaves salt behind. So as ocean water decreases, the percentage of salt increases, increasing salinity. As evaporation increases, rainfall also increases, thus it decreasing the salinity of ocean water.

A) Salinity - the salt concentration in ocean water - is a major property that influences its density and affects marine life. Ocean water contains various minerals, experiences pressure variations with depth, and supports diverse plankton communities, but salinity is a fundamental characteristic.
