The Creation stories of the Taino Indians were recorded by Fray Ramon Pane. He was a priest who traveled with Christopher Columbus during his second trip. Pane lived with the Indians and studied their religion and way of life. This was in the Dominican Republic, however it is documented that the Taino culture dominated and was the same on all the large islands including Puerto Rico, called Boriken by the natives. The origin of the islands came about because four spirit brothers stole a gourd that contained water and fishes. They drop the gourd and from it, water gushed until it flooded the earth. Leaving only the mountain tops exposed over the sea water and these are the islands of today.
