In addition to the Eiffel Tower, Gustave Eiffel designed several notable structures, including the Garabit Viaduct in France, which was an engineering marvel of its time, and the metal framework for the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal. He also contributed to the design of various bridges and railway stations, showcasing his expertise in iron construction. Eiffel's work significantly influenced the use of iron in architecture and engineering during the late 19th century.

The Eiffel Tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel (from a design by Maurice Koechlin) in the middle 1880's, and was originally planned for the "Universal Exhibition of 1888" (a "World's Fair") in Barcelona, Spain. But it was eventually built in Paris for the "Universal Exhibition of 1889". It was completed and inaugurated March 31, 1889, and opened to visitors on July 2. The structure was built between 1887 and 1889.
