In 2002, Mountain Lake, in western Virginia, began experiencing drastic dry-season drops in its water levels, as much as 15 feet below its normal depth. Geologists attribute this to fissures in the lake bottom, which normally carry away sediment that would turn the lake into a swampy bog. There is a precedent for the fluctuation in depth dating to the 18th century. From 1751 to 1804, the area and depth reported for the lake varied considerably.
