The world's largest lake is the Caspian Sea at 371,000 sq km which is completely enclosed by Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. The Caspian Sea is completely land locked and is 28 metres below sea level. The Romans thought it was a sea rather than a lake due to its huge size and the fact that the water was slightly salty to taste.
