Tower Bridge, which opened in 1894, serves exactly the same purpose today as it did then. That is to allow vehicles and people to cross the river Thames and to open to allow tall ships to travel upstream of the bridge. The only difference between 1894 and now is that traffic volume has increased significantly and shipping has decreased significantly.
Tower Bridge is a bascule bridge and is the only bridge in London which can open to allow tall ships to pass under it - although that doesn't happen very often now. It was officially opened for use by the public in 1894.
It is still in use and opens and closes several times each week.
