Portugal's interest in the so-called Indian ocean Basin began near the beginning of the 16th century.
Portugal was a small power in comparison to the major European powers like Great Britain, France and Spain. They did have a shipping and strong maritime trade industry that was larger than its size would indicate, far above the normal proportions its size might make one to expect.
Portugal's interest in the western Indian Ocean was part of this ocean's basin. She hoped to make herself wealthy by trading for the valuable porcelain, gold and other eastern valuable goods. Along with the wealth, that these precious goods supplied, Portugal's goals were to maintain & expand her sphere of influence on the east African coast and the island of Mozambique. This would not be easy to do when being in competition with England's stranglehold of the sub continent of India.
