Mass Immigration through Ellis Island effectively ended in 1924 with the implementation of the Immigration Act, which established strict quotas and limitations on the number of immigrants allowed from various countries. While Ellis Island continued to operate until 1954, the significant influx of immigrants that characterized its earlier years had already diminished by the mid-1920s.

The original Ellis Island Immigration Station opened on New Year's Day 1892. It burned to the ground just 5 years later, on June 15, 1897. Construction of the present-day Ellis Island Immigration Station (which is now the Ellis Island Immigration Museum) started almost immediately after the original one burned down. Edward Lippincott Tilton and William A. Boring won the design competition in 1897, and by 1900, the Main Building was completed. The Main Powerhouse, Hospital Building and Kitchen and Laundry Buildings were all completed in 1901.

The Statue of Liberty is not on Ellis Island. Ellis Island is to the north of Liberty island where the Statue of liberty is located. It was dedicated on 28 October 1886.
Ellis Island closed for Immigration functions on 29 November, 1954, however, its use had declined substantially for decades before that. After WWI it was usedmore as a detention center than an inspection center, as Visas were required after wWI and Visas were obtained at the point of origin so most arrivals did not require a substantial inspection.
